At one time, the Buddha was staying in the deep forest of Deer Park on Mount Setavya in the country of Bhagga.
At that time, there was an elder named Nakulapita, who was one hundred and twenty years old. He was aged, with mature faculties, frail and afflicted with illness. Desiring to see the World-Honored One and the bhikkhus he had previously revered, he came to where the Buddha was. He bowed at the Buddha's feet, sat to one side, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! I am old and frail, afflicted with illness. With my own strength, I have made an effort to come and see the World-Honored One and the bhikkhus I previously revered. I only wish that the World-Honored One would teach me the Dharma, so that I may have peace and happiness for a long time!"
At that time, the World-Honored One said to Elder Nakulapita: "Excellent, Elder! You are indeed old, with mature faculties, frail and afflicted with illness, yet you have come with your own strength to see the Tathagata and the other respected bhikkhus. Elder, you should know that while having a body afflicted with suffering, one should always cultivate a body free from suffering."
At that time, the World-Honored One instructed, taught, illuminated, and delighted Elder Nakulapita, then remained silent.
Elder Nakulapita, having heard what the Buddha said, was joyful and delighted. He bowed to the Buddha and left.
At that time, the Venerable Sāriputta was sitting under a tree not far from the World-Honored One. Elder Nakulapita went to where the Venerable Sāriputta was, bowed at his feet, and sat to one side. Then, the Venerable Sāriputta asked the Elder: "Your faculties appear harmonious and your complexion is bright. Did you hear profound teachings from the World-Honored One?"
Elder Nakulapita replied to Sāriputta: "Today, the World-Honored One taught me the Dharma, instructing, teaching, illuminating, and delighting me. With the nectar of the Dharma, he nourished my body and mind. That is why my faculties are harmonious and my complexion is bright."
The Venerable Sāriputta asked the Elder: "What Dharma did the World-Honored One teach you, instructing, teaching, illuminating, and delighting you with the moistening nectar?"
Elder Nakulapita replied to Sāriputta: "I went to the World-Honored One and said to him: 'I am old and frail, afflicted with illness, yet I have come with my own strength to see the World-Honored One and the respected bhikkhus.' The Buddha told me: 'Excellent, Elder! You are indeed old, frail, and afflicted with illness, yet you have come with your own strength to see me and the previously respected bhikkhus. Now, with this suffering body, you should always cultivate a body free from suffering.'"
"The World-Honored One taught me this Dharma, instructing, teaching, illuminating, and delighting me with the moistening nectar."
The Venerable Sāriputta asked the Elder: "Why didn't you further ask the World-Honored One: 'How does one have a suffering body and a suffering mind? How does one have a suffering body but not a suffering mind?'"
The Elder replied: "It is for this reason that I have come to the Venerable One. I only wish that you would briefly explain the essence of the Dharma to me."
The Venerable Sāriputta said to the Elder: "Excellent, Elder! Listen carefully now, I will explain it to you. The foolish, unlearned worldling does not truly understand the arising, cessation, disadvantage, gratification, and escape from form. Not truly understanding, they delight in form, saying 'form is self' or 'form belongs to self,' and cling to it. When that form changes or alters, their consciousness follows suit, and affliction arises. When affliction arises, fear, obstruction, longing, and attachment follow. The same applies to feelings, perceptions, formations, and consciousness. This is called suffering of body and mind."
"How does one have a suffering body but not a suffering mind? The well-learned noble disciple truly understands the arising, cessation, disadvantage, gratification, and escape from form. Understanding truly, they do not delight in form, do not see form as self or belonging to self. When that form changes or alters, their mind does not follow suit to produce affliction. When affliction does not arise, there is no fear, obstruction, longing, or attachment. The same applies to feelings, perceptions, formations, and consciousness. This is called having a suffering body but not a suffering mind."
When the Venerable Sāriputta taught this Dharma, Elder Nakulapita attained the pure Dharma eye. At that time, Elder Nakulapita saw the Dharma, attained the Dharma, knew the Dharma, and entered the Dharma. He crossed beyond doubt, not relying on others, and in the true Dharma, his mind became fearless. He rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, respectfully joined his palms, and said to the Venerable Sāriputta: "I have crossed over, I have transcended. I now take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Please bear witness that I am a lay follower, from this day forward until the end of my life, I take refuge in the Three Jewels."
At that time, Elder Nakulapita, having heard what the Venerable Sāriputta said, was joyful and delighted. He bowed and departed.
