The Sutra on the Eightfold Noble Path Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by An Shigao, Tripiṭaka Master from the country of Parthia, during the Later Han Dynasty.

Thus it was heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in Sravasti at the Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's park. The Buddha said to his disciples: "Listen as I explain the wrong path and the right path. What is the wrong path? Wrong view, wrong mindfulness, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong thought, and wrong concentration. These are the eight wrong practices of the path.

"What are the eight right practices of the path? First is right view. What is right view? It is faith in giving, faith in paying respects, faith in offerings, faith in the natural rewards of good and evil actions, faith in parents, faith in spiritual practitioners in the world, faith in seeking the path, faith in right conduct, and faith in right acceptance. In this life and the next, one gains wisdom and attains self-realization. This is called right view.

"Second, what is right mindfulness? It is the intention to abandon desire, abandon the household life, not harbor anger or resentment, and not harm others. This is right mindfulness.

"Third, what is right speech? It is not engaging in divisive speech, not spreading rumors, not using abusive language, and not lying. This is right speech.

"Fourth, what is right action? It is not killing, stealing, or engaging in sexual misconduct. This is right action.

"Fifth, what is right livelihood? It is when a disciple of the path seeks the Dharma in a proper way, not through improper means. They seek food, lodging, and treatment for illness through righteous means, not through improper ways. This is right livelihood.

"Sixth, what is right effort? It is the practice of aligning one's intentions with life and death, exerting oneself diligently, putting forth effort based on causes and conditions, and persevering without weariness. This is right effort.

"Seventh, what is right thought? It is aligning one's thoughts with life and death, directing one's intentions properly, not engaging in false or shared thoughts. This is called right thought.

"Eighth, what is right concentration? It is aligning one's mind with life and death, cessation of thoughts, cessation of characteristics, cessation of self-protection, and cessation of accumulation. One should not do what is impermissible, should not commit any wrongdoings, and should not fall into intermediate states. This is called right concentration."

"Bhikkhus! All disciples of the path should accept these eight practices of the true path, as explained, to attain the eight realizations of the path. Those with right view have faith in giving and will gain full merit in future lives. Those who have faith in paying respects see merit in honoring monks and spiritual practitioners. Those who have faith in offerings hang silk, burn incense, scatter flowers, and light lamps. Those who have faith in the ten good deeds naturally gain merit. Those who have faith in parents believe in filial piety. Those who have faith in spiritual practitioners in the world joyfully receive teachings. Those who have faith in seeking the path practice the path. Those who have faith in right conduct cut off evil intentions. Those who have faith in right acceptance do not violate precepts. In this life and the next, wisdom is attained through self-realization, and one becomes capable of teaching others to attain realization. One who has achieved self-realization can help others achieve realization. Being able to help others achieve realization and explain it to them is called knowledge of right view. In this way, one liberates oneself and also liberates others.

"Second, right mindfulness arises from the intention to abandon attachments. The desire to leave the household life is mindfulness of the path. Not harboring anger or resentment is patience. Not harming others is maintaining right intention.

"Third, right speech means not using abusive language or committing the four verbal misdeeds, but only speaking sincere words about the essential aspects of the path.

"Fourth, right action means not killing, stealing, or engaging in sexual misconduct, but acting with sincerity and trustworthiness.

"Fifth, right livelihood means not falling into greed, but seeking only one robe and one meal, like a humble physician.

"Sixth, right effort means orienting oneself towards the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment.

"Seventh, right thought means daily increasing one's understanding of the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, never departing from this intention.

"Eighth, right concentration means not forgetting causes and conditions. Concentration means constantly returning to protect the mind. Complete concentration means not committing any wrongdoings. Collective concentration leads to the path of merit."

Thus spoke the Buddha. All rejoiced and accepted the teaching.
