燃燒

On Fire

如是我聞:

Thus have I heard:

一時,佛住迦闍尸利沙支提,與千比丘俱,皆是舊縈髮婆羅門。

Once, the Buddha was dwelling at Kajangala in the Mukheluvana grove, accompanied by a thousand monks, all of whom were former matted-hair brahmins.

爾時,世尊為千比丘作三種示現教化。云何為三?神足變化示現、他心示現、教誡示現。

At that time, the World-Honored One demonstrated three kinds of teachings to the thousand monks. What were the three? The demonstration of supernatural powers, the demonstration of mind-reading, and the demonstration of instruction.

神足示現者,世尊隨其所應,而示現入禪定正受,陵虛至東方,作四威儀,行、住、坐、臥,入火三昧,出種種火光,青、黃、赤、白、紅、頗梨色,水火俱現、或身下出火,身上出水,身上出火,身下出水,周圓四方亦復如是。爾時,世尊作種種神變已,於眾中坐,是名神足示現。

The demonstration of supernatural powers was as follows: The World-Honored One, according to what was appropriate, demonstrated entering into meditative absorption, rising into the air and traveling to the east, displaying the four dignified poses - walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. He entered the fire samadhi, emitting various colored flames - blue, yellow, red, white, crimson, and crystal. He manifested both fire and water simultaneously - sometimes fire emerged from the lower part of his body while water flowed from the upper part, sometimes fire emerged from the upper part while water flowed from the lower part. This display extended equally in all four directions. At that time, after the World-Honored One had performed various supernatural transformations, he sat among the assembly. This is called the demonstration of supernatural powers.

他心示現者,如彼心、如彼意、如彼識,彼應作如是念、不應作如是念、彼應作如是捨、彼應作如是身證住,是名他心示現。

The demonstration of mind-reading was as follows: As their minds were, as their thoughts were, as their consciousness was, he would say, "You should think like this, you should not think like that, you should abandon this thought, you should abide in this realization." This is called the demonstration of mind-reading.

教誡示現者,如世尊說:「諸比丘!一切燒然。云何一切燒然?謂眼燒然,若色、眼識、眼觸、眼觸因緣生受,若苦、若樂、不苦不樂,彼亦燒然。如是耳、鼻、舌、身、意燒然,若法、意識、意觸、意觸因緣生受,若苦、若樂、不苦不樂,彼亦燒然,以何燒然,貪火燒然、恚火燒然、癡火燒然,生、老、病、死、憂、悲、惱、苦火燒然。」

The demonstration of instruction was as follows: The World-Honored One said, "Monks, all is burning. And what is the all that is burning? The eye is burning, forms are burning, eye-consciousness is burning, eye-contact is burning, and whatever feeling arises with eye-contact as condition - whether pleasant, painful, or neutral - that too is burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fire of lust, with the fire of hate, with the fire of delusion. I say it is burning with birth, aging, and death, with sorrows, lamentations, pains, distresses, and despairs. The ear... The nose... The tongue... The body... The mind is burning, mental phenomena are burning, mind-consciousness is burning, mind-contact is burning, and whatever feeling arises with mind-contact as condition - whether pleasant, painful, or neutral - that too is burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fire of lust, with the fire of hate, with the fire of delusion. I say it is burning with birth, aging, and death, with sorrows, lamentations, pains, distresses, and despairs."

爾時,千比丘聞佛所說,不起諸漏,心得解脫,佛說此經已,諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

At that time, upon hearing what the Buddha had said, the thousand monks' minds were liberated from the taints by not clinging. After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, the monks, having heard what the Buddha had said, were delighted and put it into practice.
